Who we are

Winterhaven Wildflowers & Native Plant Preserve is 13-acres of fertile farmland being transformed into a tall grass prairie and  wildlife habitat area as well as a native plant preserve. To support the effort, we are raising and selling native wildflowers, grasses, small shrubs and seeds. We also conduct nature walks and workshops on-site or at your location.

In our third year, 2008, we started raising monarch butterflies for tagging and release as part of the Monarch Watch program. We also started specializing in monarch habitat plants, including several varieties of milkweed - common and swamp milkweed and butterfly weed. This year, we will expand that selection to 10 species of milkweed for viewing and purchase.

Also in 2008, we founded the Milkweed for Monarchs Project, an aggressive year-round effort to gather and re-distribute milkweed seed so more seed will be planted in safe "grow zones." The response was amazing the first year, with an estimated 6,000 common milkweed seeds collected from as far away as Pennsylvania. and dozens of other beneficial native wildflowers and grasses. We grow plants for wholesale, retail,  for seed and to preserve native species. We conduct nature tours and educational programs, and were recently certified as a Monarch Waystation and a National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat.

What we do

We promote Indiana native plants through education, propogation and restoration of native species and habitats. We are developing a multi-ecosystem preserve that includes wetlands, prairie and swale. We learn as we go, and as we learn, we teach others. Come learn with us.
