Volunteers

Native plant nursery and preserve volunteers

Volunteering at Winterhaven is a rewarding and educational experience that the entire family can enjoy together.

Tasks at the nursery and preserve include planting plugs and seedling trees, potting up seedlings, watering, harvesting seeds, cleaning seeds and generally doing whatever is required to care for and maintain the plants. Even toddlers will enjoy digging with toy tools alongside children and adults of all ages who want to lend a hand in the operation of the nursery and development of the preserve.

Our volunteer days are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 7 p.m. It is best to call in advance before visiting the Nursery.

 Quintin and Barry

Two families drove out to Winterhaven together and enjoyed planting seedling trees together on Sunday, May 18. Rony Joseph and his son Rohan Joseph were joined by their friends Barry Pittendrigh, Julia Bravo Bello and their children Quintin and Natalia.

They planted about 100 seedling white pine, redbud and hazelnut trees that were grown at the Indiana State Nursery at Jasper-Pulaski State Park near Medaryville. The tree plantings are part of the Indiana DNR wildlife habitat and tallgrass prairie restoration planting in the front 3 acres of Winterhaven.
